Meet you in "the Ville."
Someone just asked, "What's this all about? What should we expect?"
Three hundred or more people powering the 8th Create WV Conference will "take over" the town of Fayetteville on September 24-26. Our 20 training sessions and workshops, designed by millenials, business experts and other high performers across key industries will convene in different buildings around town. Local businesses and regional advocates have organized a music crawl, open mic sessions for after-hours jam sessions, and "eddy out" sessions hosted at different businesses. What's an eddy-out session at Create WV? Come see for yourself! (No paddle required for this one!)
The conferees will power up at several solar powered charging stations, podcasters will be roaming the conference live. Game-changing key note speakers will mix it up with conferees during the whole conference--so conferees could find themselves rock climbing with Bill Habicht or chilling with Pia Mancini, or hanging with our Ignite WV speakers, cliffside or at various places around the region.
Joy Marr is locally sourcing and designing artisan food. Folks are welcome to attend a speed pitch session...students from around the state will be demonstrating why innovation in education matters as they talk about simulated workplaces and more.
Create WV pulls together the state's only new economy community and economic development conference. It's open to absolutely EVERYONE, and it's affordable. We are fans of disruptive, innovative startups, adaptive leadership...and we make it a point to strategically mentor and integrate all generations. Our leadership is serious about bringing all voices to the strategic table...we are teaching people how to lead, instead of waiting for an invitation or permission.
We encourage and celebrate innovation in all our pillars: education, entrepreneurship, technology, quality of place, and diversity. We also recognize the importance of social enterprise. Afterall, we are home to more than 13,000 non profits.
Our approach to convening community conversations is based on almost a decade of intense study and community organizing around innovation economy and sustainable community development.
Why Fayetteville, during the height of Gauley Season? Well...as hard as it is on the local businesses who cater to some of the world's most avid rafters at this time, we figured it would be an incredible time for local folks from around the state to see the "Ville" in action. It won't be perfect, no place ever is. But this isn't the kind of conference that brings critics who are upset with a lack of cushy accommodations...no, this conference brings people together to celebrate what we want more of, and to offer suggestions to overcome difficulties many of our communities face. There is no doubt you'll hear about our "cool policy." If you're cool, you'll get it. If you're not...well, you probably aren't in the right place. But we'll always encourage you to connect with us. LOL
Fayetteville is an adult's all-natural playground. In the last decade, a wave of adrenaline junkies has come to the southern West Virginia town for work (mostly as river rafting guides) and opted to stay for good. - Budget Travel
Pint-sized Fayetteville acts as jumping-off point for New River thrill-seekers and is an artsy mountain enclave besides. - Lonely Planet
Despite what its name might suggest, the New River is the oldest river in North America and second only to Africa’s Nile River as the oldest river system in the world. Needless to say, a float down (or should we say up, as this is one of the few rivers in the country that flows north) this iconic waterway is like floating through time...The class III-IV New River Gorge is perhaps one of the most recognized sections of the New and is a favorite among whitewater enthusiasts worldwide. For the non-adrenaline junkies though, a float down any stretch of the New is sure to provide unparalleled beauty, exposed cliff lines, and some of the best freshwater fishing in the region.- Best of the Blue Ridge 2015 - Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine
Speakers Who Will Rock Your World
Pia Mancini, Co-Founder, Democracy OS, "Democracy in the Internet Era"
Many of us talk like we have the market cornered on fatalism, apathy and good-ole-boy political gridlock here in West Virginia. We talk about having a real voice and impact in legislation and politics, but few of us have the time or capacity to integrate ourselves politically. Turns out, there's an app for that! TEDGlobal presenter Pia Mancini talks frankly about common frustrations like apathy, technology, and cultural barriers, and what she and her colleagues bravely did about it.
Bill Habicht, UC Davis
Ever heard that saying "build a bridge and get over it?" Well, that's precisely what "common good and social media conspirator" Bill Habicht will talk about. At Create WV, we where can communities get the funding to do what they want to do, and who gets to decide what's going to be done? Some communities, individuals and projects around West Virginia have already experienced success with crowdfunding, and many have failed. Bill talks bootstrapping strategy for budget-weary communities interested in transformation, and survival.
